Grayson Highlands State Park, VA
October 10, 2010
Near: Whitetop, VA
Route: Twin Pinnacles Trail, Looking Rock Trail
Distance: 3.2 miles
Conditions: Sunny, nice
Impression: Great hike! Twin Pinnacles Trail is a great option for people traveling to the Highlands who want an easy hike with great vistas...most day hikers walk from Massie Gap towards Mount Rogers, making the trails very crowded, especially on nice days/weekends...for whatever reason, this trail is never as crowded, though it's much easier...a 1.6 mile loop, the Twin Pinnacles provide spectacular views of Mt. Rogers, Whitetop Mt. and the Wilburn Ridge...this is a great alternative to the usual hike up from Massie Gap...highly recommended for those who have traversed the interior of MRNRA and are looking for something new to do...
Looking Rock Trail takes hikers to a rock outcropping that provides views of the valleys below...it's a nice trail but doesn't provide any more views that couldn't be gotten from the Twin Pinnacles Trail...i'm glad that i got it done, but don't plan on doing it again...nothing special in an area that is full of special, i wouldn't recommended it unless you are like me, trying to do every trail in the MRNRA...
Directions to Trailhead:
These two trails can be accessed near the Grayson Highlands State Park visitor office...follow the road past Massie Gap to the parking lots...Listening Rock Trail starts on the right, while the Twin Pinnacles Trail begins behind the building...
