Raven Cliff, Mount Rogers N.R.A.
November 15, 2010
Near: Wytheville, VA
Route: Raven Cliff Trail, Raven Furnace Trail
Type: Out and Back
Conditions: Partly Sunny
Impression: This was a nice and easy hike mostly along old forest/railroad bed...the cliffs are on the inside, facing the river so they don't provide tremendous views and are really hard to see when there are leaves on the trees...this trail is best done during winter i think, but watch out for hunters...i saw a bunch when i was there...the furnace is well over 100 years old and is a cool piece of history...iron ore was melted and shipped from there back in the 1800s until early 20th century...nothing too serious, but a nice easy hike for those looking for a place to take their dog or kill some time...
From Wytheville, VA take Hwy 21 south until you reach SR 619...take a left there and Raven Cliff Campgrounds after a few miles...take the first right following the campground on SR 642 and then another right onto SR 643...the trailhead is less than a mile from there...it's sounds harder than it is and having the map will make it super easy...
