Grassy Ridge Mountain, NC
February 1, 2010
Route: Appalachian Trail to Grassy Ridge Trail
Type: Out and Back
Distance: 12 miles
Conditions: Cold, knee high snow
Impressions: When i left the house, my intention was to hike up Unaka Mountain, but about 2/3 of the way up, i decided that i wanted to spend the night on Grassy Ridge, so i turned around and got back into the car and drove over to Carvers Gap...i'm so glad i did...the hike from the gap to the mountain is one of my favorites and something i'm always gamed to do...the snow, sometimes knee high but always present, made this a slightly longer hike than normal...
the real adventure came after i set up my mega light tent and went to sleep...around 11 pm, i was awaken by the sounds of high winds slapping my teepee around...after about a minute of listening to the wind and watching the compression on two sides of my tent grow deeper, two tent stakes gave way...i had to quickly get out of my zero degree bag and grab both the center pole and the flapping corner without, thankfully, the titanium tent stake hanging from it...it was one of those situations where you go from completely sleeping to wide awake and with real work to do...when i went to bed, i put my shoes inside the sleeping bag with me, after five minutes of no longer being on my feet, they froze and i didn't want to deal with frozen shoes the next morning...anyway, i put my warm shoes on and repaired the tent, however a couple minutes later the same thing happened and i my patience ran out...i decided to pack all my gear in one bigh heap into my bag, took down the tent and went back to the car...it wasn't until almost midnight when i got back to the car and well after one in the morning before i made it home...
