Grandfather Mountain, NC
January 15, 2010
Route: Asutsi Trail to Daniel Boone Scout Trail
Type: Out and Back
Distance: 7 miles
Conditions: Knee high snow, icy, cold
Impressions: This was an extremely difficult hike...it took me about 5 hours to do the seven miles and i got lost in a couple places...at times, the blazing can be somewhat difficult to follow...about 3 tenths of a mile below the Calloway Peak there is Hi-Balsam Shelter which seemed to be able to sleep 6...it may be the smallest shelter i've ever seen, but is a nice respite on a strenuous hike...along the DBS trail there are multiple places to camp and supposedly water, though i didn't see any myself...for a day hike up, this is fun and challenging trail...
Directions to Trailhead:
There are two points for accessing East Side trails. Most hikers use the Boone Fork Parking Area at mile 299.9 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The alternative is the Asutsi Trail which begins across from Serenity Farm on US 221-the only winter access when the Parkway is closed.
