Grandfather Mountain, NC
October 12, 2010
Near: Blowing Rock, NC
Route: Profile Trail, Grandfather Trail
Type: Out and back
Distance: 7.5 miles
Conditions: Sunny and warm
Impression: I love Grandfather Mountain, it's probably my favorite mountain in the Southern Appalachia...the Profile Trail leads hikers up the northern side of the Calloway Peak (5964 ft), meandering 3.2 miles upward to the Grandfather Trail...from there, we first went right towards the MacRae Peak, but were thwarted by the rocks...this way is not dog friendly, even for the most athletic canine...we turned around, heading towards the Calloway Peak and spent some good time checking out the views and eating a snack...i had never been out to the Watauga Lake view and was stunned by the view that it provides of Grandfather's MacRae Peak...
This hike is strenuous and plenty of time should be allotted...even though mileage doesn't seem like too much, the trail gains over 2000 ft in elevation and that takes a toll on the body...there is a spring near the top of the Profile Trail that is reliable, so don't drag too much water on the way up...with plenty of campsites along both the Profile and Grandfather trails, this is a MUST see mountain for any hiking enthusiast that lives within a 4 hour radius...the fall colors were amazing and for a day hike, this is a great choice!
Directions to Trailhead:
From Boone, take Hwy 105 south...about 2 miles past the turn for Ski Hawksnest, the trailhead parking lot will be on the left...it goes down, off the side of the road, so pay attention for the parking lot sign...if you come to where Hwy 184 intersects with Hwy 105, you've gone too far...
