Cumberland Gap National Historical Park
May 29-30, 2011
Impression: Following an old forest service road, this trail leads to the Appalachian Trail and Saunders Shelter...though uphill the whole way, it's an easy grade and wasn't too taxing...i suspect this is an underused trail, which is nice for those like me that bring their dog...well marked, but with little water until the shelter (which i was told was a ways down a hill), this is a great day hike for someone with only a few hours to kill and the desire to see some nature without human contact...
Directions to Trailhead:
From Damascus, VA, take Hwy 58 east almost 6 miles...the trailhead's parking lot is on the right-hand (south) side of 58, about .25 miles from the Beartree Campground entrance...it's kind of hard to see, so be on the lookout!
