Backbone Rock to Damascus

October 18, 2010

Near:  Damascus, VA
Route:  Backbone Rock Trail to Appalachian Trail
Type:  One way
Distance:  7 miles
Difficulty:  Strenuous at first, then Average
Conditions:  Sunny, nice

Impression:  This hike is only difficult for the first 1.5 miles, where there's 1300' of elevation gain...after that, it's a nice hike along the AT crossing the TN and VA border...there's a new sign replacing the old and dilapidated one that was previously there...another great day out on the trail, crossing paths with the AT...

Directions to Trailhead:
Easily accessed from downtown Damascus, VA by taking S. Shady Ave/TN 133  south off of 58 for 4 miles to Backbone...falls are on the east side of the road, the trail begins on the west...easy to follow as the trail is blue blazed...
